ABSTRACT: Acclimatization is the final phase of banana plantlet production by micropropagation. In this phase, the plantlets are grown in a protected environment with high demand for water, fertilizer and labor, until reaching the standard size and quality required for marketing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of reducing these costs and the duration of the acclimatization phase, using the hydroponic cultivation technique as compared to the conventional system. ‘Prata–Anã’ banana plantlet performance was measured for both systems under both tropical summer and winter conditions, based upon water and nutrient use efficiency and growing time of the plantlets. In both seasons, the plantlets produced hydroponically presented faster growth of both the shoot and root systems. There was a reduction of 12 days to reach the transplantation point, a significant reduction in plantlet production cost (fertilizers + water) and improved efficiency in space use with an expressive increase in the number of plantlets produced per square meter.

RESUMO Irregularidade ou escassez de chuvas nas regiões semiáridas faz com que os agricultores utilizem água de baixa qualidade na irrigação das lavouras. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência do uso de água e qualidade pós-colheita de minimelancia ‘Sugar Baby’, em resposta a diferentes condutividades elétricas da solução nutritiva [2,5 (controle); 3,5; 4,5; 5,5; e 6,5 dS m-1], em sistema hidropônico floating. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Avaliaram-se o consumo hídrico, produção, eficiência do uso de água e variáveis qualitativas e físico-químicas dos frutos. O consumo hídrico total das plantas durante o ciclo variou entre 43 (6,5 dS m-1) e 54 (2,5 dS m-1) L planta-1 entre os tratamentos, com eficiência do uso de água de 0,031 kg L-1. As maiores reduções pela salinidade da solução nutritiva foram observadas para espessura da casca e massa dos frutos (8,80 e 5,69 %, respectivamente, por incremento unitário em dS m-1). A salinidade da solução nutritiva não influenciou o teor de sólidos solúveis e índice de maturação dos frutos, porém teve efeito negativo sobre o pH e a acidez titulável.

ABSTRACT Irregularity or shortage of rainfall in semi-arid regions forces farmers to use low-quality water to irrigate crops. The present study aimed to assess the water-use efficiency and post-harvest quality of ‘Sugar Baby’ mini watermelon in response to different electrical conductivities of the nutrient solution [2.5 (control), 3.5, 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 dS m-1], in a floating hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates. The water consumption, production and water-use efficiency were evaluated, as well as qualitative and physico-chemical variables of the fruits. The total water consumption of the plants during the crop cycle varied between 43 (6.5 dS m-1) and 54 (2.5 dS m-1) L plant-1 among the treatments, with water-use efficiency of 0.031 kg L-1. The greatest reductions due to the nutrient solution salinity were observed for the rind thickness and fruit mass (8.80 and 5.69 %, respectively, per unit increase in dS m-1). The salinity of the nutrient solution did not influence the soluble solids content and fruit maturity index, but it had a negative effect on the pH and titratable acidity.

RESUMO A melancia tem um papel importante no agronegócio brasileiro. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes manejos de irrigação e níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação, nas principais características produtivas e de pós-colheita de minimelancia (Citrullus lanatus) cv. ‘Sugar Baby’. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, arranjado em esquema fatorial 2 x 4, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de dois tipos de manejo de irrigação (gotejamento convencional e por pulsos) e quatro níveis salinos da solução nutritiva de fertigação (2,5; 4,5; 5,5; 6,5 dS m-1). O tratamento controle correspondeu à condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva preparada com água de abastecimento local. A lâmina de irrigação foi calculada a partir do produto da evapotranspiração de referência e o coeficiente de cultivo. Os números de pulsos foram definidos e fracionados em função da demanda atmosférica. A salinidade da solução de fertigação afeta algumas variáveis de produção, mas não reduz a qualidade dos frutos de minimelancia cv. ‘Sugar Baby’. O manejo de irrigação por pulsos mostra melhores resultados em baixa salinidade, enquanto o manejo por gotejamento convencional é mais adequado para alta salinidade (6,5 dS m-1).

ABSTRACT Watermelon plays an important role in Brazilian agribusiness. The objective of present study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation managements and water salinity levels, on the main productive and postharvest characteristics of mini-watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cv. ‘Sugar Baby’. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of two types of irrigation management (conventional and pulse) and four saline levels of nutrient solution of fertigation (2.5; 4.5; 5.5; 6.5 dS m-1). The control treatment corresponded to the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution prepared with local supply water. The irrigation depth was calculated by the product of reference evapotranspiration and crop coefficient. The number of pulses were defined and fractionated according to the atmospheric demand. The salinity of the fertigation solution affects some variables of the production, but does not reduce the quality of the mini-fruit cv. ‘Sugar Baby’. The management of pulse irrigation shows better results in low salinity, while conventional drip management is more suitable for high salinity (6.5 dS m-1).

RESUMO A salinidade é um dos principais fatores limitantes para o crescimento das culturas. As respostas metabólicas ao estresse salino são variáveis dependendo das características da espécie. O presente estudo teve como objetivo selecionar genótipos de girassol tolerantes ao estresse salino e avaliar alguns mecanismos de tolerância ao sal em dois genótipos contrastantes (tolerantes e sensíveis ao sal). No primeiro ensaio, foram avaliados a produção de biomassa e o acúmulo de Na+ e K+ em 26 genótipos de girassol. Os genótipos AG963, AG967, AG972, BRS321, BRS324, H251, H360 e H863 apresentaram menor produção de biomassa e foram caracterizados como sensíveis ao sal e os genótipos BRS323, Catisol, EXP11-26, EXP44-49, EXP60050, EXP887, HLA860HO e Olisun 5 apresentaram maior produção de biomassa e foram considerados tolerantes ao sal. O alto teor de K+ e o baixo teor de Na+ nas folhas foram as características iônicas relacionados à tolerância ao sal e podem ser utilizados em programas de melhoramento de girassol para esse fim. No segundo ensaio, as plantas de BRS323 tolerantes ao sal apresentaram menor teor de Na+ e Cl- e maiores níveis de K+ do que as plantas de AG967 sensível ao sal. Uma melhor homeostase nos mecanismos de transporte, distribuição e acumulação de solutos inorgânicos em conjunto com um mecanismo de osmorregulação mais eficiente através da síntese de solutos orgânicos pode, ao menos em parte, explicar a maior tolerância ao sal do genótipo BRS323 em comparação com o AG967.

ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the main limiting factors for crop growth. The metabolic responses to salt stress are variable and depend on species characteristics. This study aimed to select sunflower genotypes tolerant to salt stress and evaluate some mechanisms of salt tolerance in two contrasting (salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive) genotypes. In the first assay, the biomass production and the accumulation of Na+ and K+ in 26 sunflower genotypes were evaluated. Genotypes AG963, AG967, AG972, BRS321, BRS324, H251, H360 and H863 showed lower biomass production and were characterized as salt-sensitive and the genotypes BRS323, Catisol, EXP11-26, EXP44-49, EXP60050, EXP887, HLA860HO and Olisun 5 showed higher biomass production and were considered salt-tolerant. The high K+ content and the low Na+ content in the leaves were the ion traits related to salt tolerance and can be used in sunflower breeding programs for this purpose. In the second assay, the plants of salt-tolerant BRS323 had lower Na+ and Cl- contents and higher levels of K+ than plants of salt-sensitive AG967. A better homeostasis in the mechanisms of transport, distribution and accumulation of inorganic solutes in conjunction with a more efficient osmoregulation mechanism through the synthesis of organic solutes may, at least in part, explain the greater salt-tolerance of BRS323 genotype in comparison to AG967.

RESUMO O presente estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação objetivando-se demonstrar a tolerância ao cádmio (Cd) em genótipos de girassol e avaliar a eficácia dos parâmetros fotossintéticos como indicadores fisiológicos dessa tolerância. Para isto, foram utilizadas sementes de dois genótipos de girassol previamente identificados como tolerante (H358) e sensível (AG960) ao Cd. As sementes foram germinadas em copos plásticos contendo substrato vegetal e, após 9 dias, as plântulas foram transferidas para bacias plásticas com solução nutritiva contendo 0 ou 10 µM de Cd , onde permaneceram por 16 dias. As plantas foram coletadas a cada 5 dias. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em um arranjo fatorial 4 (dias de exposição) × 2 (genótipos) × 2 (níveis de Cd), com quatro repetições. A exposição ao Cd reduziu a taxa de assimilação líquida do CO2, a condutância estomática e a eficiência de carboxilação, bem como os teores de todos os pigmentos fotossintéticos, a razão Fy/Fm e o YII das plantas de ambos os genótipos estudados. Demonstrando que a redução na taxa fotossintética dessas plantas foi ocasionada tanto por limitações estomáticas como não-estomáticas. Os efeitos deletérios do Cd foram mais pronunciados no genótipo AG960 em comparação com o H358. Assim, as variáveis A, gs e os teores de pigmentos mostraram-se bons indicadores fisiológicos da tolerância do girassol ao estresse por Cd e podem, ao menos em parte, explicar a maior tolerância do genótipo H358 em relação ao AG960.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the tolerance to cadmium (Cd) of sunflower genotypes grown in greenhouse conditions, and the effectiveness of using photosynthetic parameters as physiological indicators of this tolerance. Seeds of two sunflower genotypes previously identified as tolerant (H358) and Cd-sensitive (AG960) to Cd were used. The seeds were germinated in plastic cups containing plant substrate; after 9 days, the seedlings were transplanted to plastic basins containing a nutrient solution with 0 or 10 µM of Cd, where they remained for 16 days. Samples of the plants were harvested every 5 days. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete design, using a 4×2×2 factorial arrangement (4 days of grown in a nutrient solution with Cd, 2 sunflower genotypes, and 2 Cd levels) with four replications. Cd stress decreased CO2 net assimilation, stomatal conductance, carboxylation efficiency, photosynthetic pigment contents, potential quantum yield (Fv/Fm), and effective quantum yield of plants of the two evaluated genotypes. The decrease in photosynthetic rates of these plants was caused by both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations. Plants of the AG960 genotype showed more pronounced deleterious effects due to Cd stress than those of the H358 genotype. Thus, CO2 net assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, and chloroplast pigment content are good physiological indicators of sunflower tolerance to Cd and can at least in part, explain the greater tolerance of the H358 genotype to Cd stress when compared to the AG960 genotype.

RESUMO O Amaranthus cruentus L. é uma espécie forrageira, com grãos que possuem ótimas características nutricionais, sendo a cultivar 'BRS Alegria' a primeira recomendada para cultivo no Brasil. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do estresse salino no crescimento e concentrações de solutos orgânicos e inorgânicos em Amaranthus cruentus L. cv. 'BRS Alegria'. Foram avaliados a altura, diâmetro do caule, número de folhas, massa seca das folhas, caule e raízes, área foliar, teor relativo de água, porcentagem de integridade das membranas e teores de carboidratos solúveis, aminoácidos livres, proteínas solúveis, prolina livre, Na+, Cl- e K+, nos diferentes órgãos da planta. A salinidade reduziu fortemente a produção de biomassa e a área foliar a partir do tratamento com 25 mM de NaCl, indicando que a cultivar 'BRS Alegria' é sensível ao estresse salino. Os carboidratos solúveis nas folhas diminuíram 59 %, enquanto os demais solutos orgânicos não apresentaram aumentos substanciais. Esses resultados, associados à diminuição do teor relativo de água e da integridade das membranas, sugerem uma baixa capacidade dessa cultivar para o ajustamento osmótico sob estresse salino. A razão K+/Na+ reduziu-se abruptamente em 25 mM de NaCl, sugerindo desequilíbrio iônico, o que pode, ao menos em parte, explicar a redução de crescimento induzida pelo sal.

ABSTRACT Amaranthus cruentus L. is a forage species, with grains that exhibit excellent nutritional characteristics, being the 'BRS Alegria' the first cultivar recommended for cultivation in Brazil. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of salt stress on the growth and concentrations of organic and inorganic solutes in Amaranthus cruentus L. ('BRS Alegria' cultivar). Height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf, stem and root dry mass, leaf area, relative water content and membrane integrity percentage, as well as soluble carbohydrate, free amino acid, soluble protein, free proline, Na+, Cl- and K+ contents, were evaluated in different plant organs. Salinity significantly reduced the biomass yield and leaf area from the treatment with 25 mM of NaCl, indicating that the 'BRS Alegria' cultivar is sensitive to salt stress. Soluble carbohydrates in the leaves decreased by 59 %, while the other organic solutes showed no substantial increases. These results, coupled with the reduction in the relative water content and membrane integrity, suggest a low ability of this cultivar to adjust osmotically under salt stress. The K+/Na+ ratio abruptly decreased in 25 mM of NaCl, suggesting an ionic imbalance, which may partially explain the salt-induced growth reduction.

RESUMO A toxicidade do alumínio (Al) em plantas demonstra que a avaliação de genótipos é importante para o reconhecimento de marcadores de tolerância. Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos do estresse por Al no teor relativo de água, danos de membrana e alterações anatômicas, em variedades de girassol tolerante e sensível ao Al. Plantas de girassol [Catissol (tolerante) e IAC-Uruguai (sensível)] foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva (controle) ou solução nutritiva com 0,15 mM de AlCl3 (tratamento de estresse), em casa-de-vegetação. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial composto por quatro épocas de colheita x duas variedades de girassol x dois níveis de Al, com quatro repetições. Os resultados demonstraram efeitos deletérios do Al na porcentagem de integridade absoluta e no teor relativo de água apenas na variedade IAC-Uruguai. Estes resultados nas folhas estressadas da variedade sensível podem ter advindo dos danos na estrutura do xilema. Além disso, o aumento da espessura da lâmina foliar e nas camadas de parênquima, bem como a lignificação de tecidos da raiz, são características importantes de plantas IAC-Uruguai, podendo ser utilizadas como marcador anatômico da sensibilidade do girassol ao Al.

ABSTRACT Aluminum (Al) toxicity in plants evidences the importance of genotype evaluation to the identification of tolerance markers. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of aluminum stress on the relative water content, membrane damages and anatomical changes, in Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive sunflower cultivars. Sunflower plants [Catissol (Al-tolerant) and IAC-Uruguai (Al-sensitive)] were grown in nutrient solution (control) or nutrient solution containing 0.15 mM of AlCl3 (Al-stress treatment), in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial arrangement consisting of four harvest times x two sunflower cultivars x two Al levels, with four replications. The results showed that Al negatively affected the absolute integrity percentage and relative water content only for the IAC-Uruguay cultivar. These results in the stressed leaves of the Al-sensitive cultivar may be due to damage in the xylem structure. In addition, the increase in leaf blade thickness and parenchyma layers, as well as lignification of root tissues, are important traits of IAC-Uruguay plants and may be used as anatomical markers of Al sensitivity in sunflower.

RESUMO: Martianthus leucocephalus é encontrada no semiárido nordestino e possui potencial farmacológico atribuído à produção de compostos voláteis. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito de doses de Cd (15, 30, 45 and 60µmol L-1), Cu (30, 60, 90 and 120µmol L-1) e Zn (150, 300, 450 and 600µmol L-1) no crescimento dessa espécie e na produção de compostos voláteis. Estacas apicais foram transferidas para bandejas plásticas contendo 6,0L de solução nutritiva e, após o enraizamento, foram submetidas aos tratamentos de Cd, Cu e Zn, durante 15 dias. Todos os metais avaliados reduziram a suculência e o crescimento de todas as partes de M. leucocephalus . Este efeito foi acompanhado pelo incremento das concentrações de Cd, Cu e Zn em todos os tecidos das plantas. Também foi observado que o teor de compostos voláteis, produzido por M. leucocephalus, foi aumentado apenas pelo Zn (86%).

ABSTRACT: Martianthus leucocephalus is found in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil and has high pharmacological potential due to the production of volatile compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the Cd (15, 30, 45 and 60µmol L-1), Cu (30, 60, 90 and 120µmol L-1) and Zn (150, 300, 450 and 600µmol L-1) levels on the growth of this species and its volatile compounds production. Apical cuttings were placed in plastic trays containing 6.0L nutrient solution, and after rooting, they were submitted to Cd, Cu and Zn treatments for 15 days. All the metals evaluated reduced the succulence and growth of all parts of M. leucocephalus . This effect was accompanied by the increase of Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in all plant tissues. Volatile compounds content produced by M. leucocephalus was increased only by Zn (86%).

O girassol é uma cultura de grande importância mundial, devido ao óleo de excelente qualidade que se extrai de suas sementes e aos grãos in natura que são consumidos de diversas formas. No entanto, a seca é um dos principais fatores ambientais que limitam sua produtividade. Conduziu-se um experimento em condições controladas de casa-de-vegetação, em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, para determinar o efeito da inoculação de bactérias endofíticas (Bacillus sp. e Enterobacter cloacae) sobre o crescimento e teores de nutrientes e de solutos orgânicos, em folhas e raízes de girassol sob défice hídrico. Aos 35 dias após a emergência, foram avaliados a altura, diâmetro do caule e biomassas fresca e seca da parte aérea e das raízes, bem como os teores de N, P, K, carboidratos solúveis, prolina livre, aminoácidos livres e proteínas solúveis. O défice hídrico reduziu o crescimento do girassol, independentemente de inoculação. Entretanto, em condições ideais de umidade do solo, a combinação de ambas as bactérias endofíticas incrementou o crescimento do girassol. O défice hídrico também aumentou os teores de N e K, nas folhas, bem como o teor de solutos orgânicos, na parte aérea, sendo este aumento mais pronunciado nas plantas inoculadas. Os dados sugerem que a inoculação de bactérias endofíticas pode aumentar a capacidade de as plantas sob estresse hídrico realizarem o ajustamento osmótico pelo maior acúmulo de solutos orgânicos, quando comparadas com as plantas não inoculadas.

The sunflower crop has a great importance worldwide, due to the oil of excellent quality extracted from its seeds and in natura grains that are consumed in various ways. However, drought is one of the main environmental factors that limit its yield. An experiment was carried out under controlled greenhouse conditions, in a completely randomized experimental design, in order to determine the effect of endophytic bacteria inoculation (Bacillus sp. and Enterobacter cloacae) on the growth and contents of nutrients and organic solutes, in sunflower leaves and roots under water deficit. Plant height, stem diameter, fresh and dry biomass of shoot and roots, as well as contents of N, P, K, soluble carbohydrates, free proline, free amino acids and soluble proteins, were determined at 35 days after the plant emergence. The water deficit reduced plant growth regardless inoculation. However, under optimum conditions of soil moisture, the combination of both endophytic bacteria increased the sunflower growth. The water deficit also increased the N and K contents in leaves, as well as the organic solutes content in shoots, especially in inoculated plants. These results suggest that the inoculation of endophytic bacteria may increase the capacity of drought stressed plants to perform the osmotic adjustment through a higher accumulation of organic solutes, when compared to plants not inoculated.

O efeito do estresse salino de intensidade e duração conhecida nos parâmetros de fluorescência da clorofila em plantas de girassol foi estudado objetivando selecionar genótipos tolerantes e sensíveis à salinidade. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em um arranjo fatorial entre 10 genótipos e 2 níveis de salinidade, com quatro repetições. As sementes foram semeadas em areia lavada e, após a germinação, foram transplantadas para vasos contendo solução nutritiva ou solução nutritiva com 100 mM de NaCl, em casa de vegetação. Após 27 dias nessas condições, foram avaliadas a fluorescência basal (F0), a eficiência quântica potencial do fotossistema 2 - PS2 (Fv/Fm), a razão Fv/F0 e a eficiência quântica efetiva do PS2 (Y). Os coeficientes dos "quenching" fotoquímico (qP) e não fotoquímico (qN, qCN e NPQ) também foram calculados. O estresse salino aumentou F0 e diminuiu Fv/Fm, Fv/F0 e Y, sugerindo injúrias na estrutura dos tilacóides causadas pela salinidade. Esses efeitos foram mais pronunciados no genótipo AG-960 e menos pronunciados no AG-975. O genótipo AG-960 também apresentou os maiores aumentos em qN, qCN e NPQ, em contraste com o observado para o AG-975. Dessa forma, AG-975 e AG-960 foram caracterizados como tolerante e sensível à salinidade, respectivamente. Os demais genótipos apresentaram tolerância intermediária ao estresse salino. Os resultados indicam que a fluorescência da clorofila pode ser utilizada como uma ferramenta para a seleção de genótipos de girassol tolerantes à salinidade.

The effect of salt stress of known intensity and duration on chlorophyll fluorescence in sunflower plants was studied aiming to identify salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive genotypes. The experimental design was a completely randomized in a factorial arrangement among 10 genotypes and two salt levels, with four replications. Seeds were sown in sand, and after germination were transplanted to plastic pots with nutrient solution or nutrient solution containing 100 mM of NaCl and placed in a greenhouse. After 27 days, ground fluorescence (F0), maximum quantum yield of PS2 Fv/Fm, the Fv/F0 ratio and effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 - PS2 (Y) were evaluated. The photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical (qN, qCN e NPQ) coefficients were also calculated. Salt stress increased F0 and reduced Fv/Fm, Fv/F0, and Y, suggesting salt-induced structural damage in the thylakoid membranes. These effects were more pronounced in genotype AG-960 and lowest in AG-975. The highest increases in qN, qCN and NPQ were also found in genotype AG-960 in contrast with that observed in AG-975. Thus the AG-975 and AG-960 genotypes were characterized as the most salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive, respectively. The other genotypes showed intermediate tolerance to salt stress. Our results suggest that chlorophyll fluorescence could be used as a tool for the screening of sunflower genotypes for salinity tolerance.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o crescimento de plantas jovens de nim-indiano (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) submetidas a diferentes regimes hídricos. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com sete tratamentos (100, 80, 60, 40 e 20% da capacidade de pote, suspensão de rega e reirrigado). Avaliaram-se, semanalmente, a altura, número de folhas e diâmetro do caule. Ao final do experimento, as plantas tiveram seus órgãos separados e levados à estufa para obtenção da matéria seca das folhas, caule, raízes e total e, ainda, alocação de biomassa nas folhas, caule e raízes. Também foram calculadas a área foliar, a razão de área foliar e a área foliar específica. O déficit hídrico diminuiu a altura, número de folhas e diâmetro do caule das plantas nos tratamentos mais severos. Os efeitos do estresse também foram observados na redução da matéria seca das folhas, caule, raízes e total e na alocação de biomassa para as folhas. A área foliar também apresentou reduções, mas a razão de área foliar e a área foliar específica não diferiram entre os tratamentos. As plantas reirrigadas mostraram recuperação, principalmente evidenciada pela emissão de novas folhas. Desse modo, sugere-se que para máximo crescimento o nim deve ser cultivado, na fase inicial de desenvolvimento, com 80% da capacidade de pote.

This work was performed aiming to evaluate the growth of neem seedlings (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) under water deficit. The experimental design was entirely randomized, with seven treatments (100, 80, 60, 40 and 20% of field capacity, without water and re-watering). The height, number of leaves and stem diameter were analyzed weekly. At the end of the experiment, dry matter of the leaves, shoots, roots, root to shoot ratio and biomass allocation in leaf, stem and roots were determined. Leaf area, leaf area ratio and specific leaf area were also calculated. Water stress reduced the height, number of leaves and shoot diameter in the plants of the several treatments. Water stress reduced leaf, stem and root dry matter. Only the biomass allocation to leaves was reduced. Leaf area was also reduced; however, there were not significant differences for leaf area ratio and specific leaf area. The recovery of the re-watering plants was evident by emitting new leaves. The results suggest that neem seedlings must be cultivated, in the initial phase of development, under 80% of field capacity, with maximum production.

Sementes de oito genótipos de milho (BR3123, BR5004, BR5011, BR5026, BR5033, CMS50, D766 e ICI8447) foram semeadas em vermiculita e, após a germinação, transplantadas para vasos contendo solução nutritiva ou solução nutritiva com 100 mmol.L-1 de NaCl, em casa de vegetação. Durante o período experimental avaliaram-se, em plantas de todos os genótipos, sob condições de controle e estresse salino, os seguintes parâmetros: crescimento (matéria seca, relação de matéria seca parte aérea/raiz, área foliar, taxa de crescimento relativo e taxa de assimilação líquida), temperatura foliar, condutância estomática, transpiração, potencial hídrico antemanhã e teores de sódio, potássio, aminoácidos solúveis e carboidratos solúveis. O estresse salino reduziu o crescimento das plantas de todos os genótipos, sendo o BR5033 e o BR5011 caracterizados como tolerante e sensível ao estresse salino respectivamente. A resposta estomática do genótipo tolerante não foi influenciada pela salinidade. Entre os parâmetros estudados, a relação de matéria seca parte aérea/raiz e os teores de sódio e de solutos orgânicos nas folhas não mostraram relação com a tolerância à salinidade, isto é, não foram considerados bons marcadores morfo-fisiológicos para a tolerância à salinidade em milho. Em contraste, os teores de sódio e de solutos orgânicos nas raízes mostraram desempenhar um importante papel na aclimatação dos genótipos estudados ao estresse salino, sugerindo que eles poderiam ser usados como marcadores fisiológicos durante a seleção para tolerância à salinidade.

Seeds from eight different maize genotypes (BR3123, BR5004, BR5011, BR5026, BR5033, CMS50, D766 and ICI8447) were sown in vermiculite, and after germination they were transplanted into nutrient solution or nutrient solution containing 100 mmol.L-1 of NaCl and placed in a greenhouse. During the experimental period plant growth (dry matter, shoot to root dry mass ratio, leaf area, relative growth rate, and net assimilation rate), leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, transpiration, predawn water potential, sodium, potassium, soluble amino acids and soluble carbohydrate contents were determined in both control and salt stressed plants of all genotypes studied. Salt stress reduced plant growth of all genotypes but the genotypes BR5033 and BR5011 were characterized as the most salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive, respectively. Stomatal response of the salt-tolerant genotype was not affected by salinity. Among the studied parameters, shoot to root dry mass ratio, leaf sodium content and leaf soluble organic solute content showed no relation with salt tolerance, i.e., they could not be considered as good morpho-physiological markers for maize salt tolerance. In contrast, sodium and soluble organic solutes accumulation in the roots as a result of salt stress appeared to play an important role in the acclimation to salt stress of the maize genotypes studied, suggesting that they could be used as physiological markers during the screening for salt tolerance.

Com o objetivo de avaliar o comportamento estomático e o potencial da água da folha em plantas jovens de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, Enterolobium contortisiliquum e Tabebuia aurea submetidas a estresse hídrico, desenvolveu-se um experimento em casa de vegetação no Laboratório de Fisiologia Vegetal da UFRPE. As plântulas foram submetidas a dois tratamentos hídricos (100% da CP e 50% da CP) e aos 5¹, 7, 13 e 22 dias de estresse hídrico, foram avaliadas a transpiração (E), a resistência difusiva (Rs), a temperatura da folha (Tfol), a temperatura do ar (Tar), umidade relativa do ar (UR), a radiação fotossinteticamente ativa (PAR) e o déficit de pressão de vapor (DPV) às 7h, 9h, 12h e 15h. Após 30 dias de estresse, foi medido o potencial da água da folha (Yw) entre 9-10 horas. Os maiores valores de E foram registrados entre 9-12h para todas as espécies, sendo mais baixos nas plantas estressadas. O oposto foi verificado para Rs, com diferenças na magnitude dos valores entre espécies e horários de avaliação. A Rs das plantas estressadas de E. contortisiliquum foi influenciada pela Tar e de M. caesalpiniifolia pela UR e PAR. O Yw decresceu com o estresse, com reduções de até 155%. A Tfol não se mostrou bom indicador dos efeitos do estresse hídrico sobre as espécies.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the estomatal behavior and the leaf water potential in Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, Enterolobium contortisiliquum and Tabebuia aurea young plants cultivated under water stress. This work was performed in greenhouse of the Laboratório de Fisiologia Vegetal of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Brazil. Seedlings were submitted to two water treatment (100% and 50% pot capacity). On the 5th, 7th, 13th and 22th days of water treatments, the transpiration (E), diffusive resistance (Rs), leaf temperature (Tfol), air temperature (Tar), relative air humidity (UR), photossynthetically active radiation (PAR) and vapour pressure deficit (DPV) were evaluated at 7, 9, 12, 15h. After 30th days the leaf water potential (Yw) was measured, between 9-10h. The highest values of E were registered between 9-12h for all the species, although the stressed plants presented inferior values compared to the control plants. The opposite was verified for the Rs, however the differences in the magnitude and values among species and hours of evaluated were observed. The stomatal behavior of the stressed plants of E. contortisiliquum was influenced by the Tar and the M. caesalpiniifolia was influenced by the UR and PAR. The Yw decreased with the placing of stress, with reduction as much as 155%. The leaf temperature did not show a good indicator on the effects of water stress on the species studied.

Este trabalho foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, com o objetivo de se avaliar o efeito do estresse salino sobre a distribuição de nutrientes em cultivares de milho com tolerância diferenciada à salinidade. Foi utilizado um arranjo fatorial 2 x 5 com duas cultivares de milho (P-3051 e BR-5011) e cinco níveis de NaCl na solução nutritiva (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100 mol m-3). O estresse salino elevou as concentrações de Na+ e reduziu as de K+ em todas as partes das plantas. Foi observada acumulação preferencial de Na+ nos tecidos do colmo e da bainha, em detrimento dos tecidos do limbo. Os teores de Ca++ foram diminuídos na raiz, no colmo e limbo das plantas, enquanto os de Mg++ só diminuíram na raiz e no colmo. No nível 100 mol m-3 de NaCl, os teores de Ca++ nas raízes da cultivar P-3051 foram cerca de 60% mais elevados que os da BR-5011. A salinidade incrementou as relações Na+/K+, Na+/Ca++ e Na+/Mg++ em todas as partes das plantas, sendo este acréscimo mais evidente na cultivar BR-5011 que na P-3051.

The work was performed in the greenhouse, aiming to evaluate the effect of salt stress on distribution of nutrients in different parts of maize cultivars differing in their tolerance to salinity. The experiment was carried out on 2 x 5 factorial arrangement with two maize cultivars (P-3051 and BR-5011) and five sodium chloride levels in nutrient solution (0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 mol m-3). Salt stress increased Na+ content and decreased K+ content in all plant parts. Na+ content was higher in stalk and sheath than in leaf blade tissue. Ca++ content decreased in root, stalk and leaf blade while Mg++ content decreased only in root and in stalk tissue. Root Ca++ content in the cultivar P-3051 under 100 mol m-3 NaCl was 60% higher than in the cultivar BR-5011. The salt treatment increased Na+/K+, Na+/Ca++ and Na+/Mg++ ratios in all plant parts, and the increment was higher in the P-3051 than in the BR-5011 cultivar.

O trabalho foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, objetivando-se avaliar o efeito do estresse salino sobre o crescimento de cultivares de milho com tolerância diferenciada à salinidade. Foi utilizado um arranjo fatorial 2 x 5 com duas cultivares de milho (P-3051 e BR-5011) e cinco níveis de cloreto de sódio na solução nutritiva (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100 mol m-3). Avaliaram-se a matéria seca (MS) da parte aérea e raízes, razão parte aérea/raiz, área foliar (AF), taxas de crescimento absoluto (TCA), relativo (TCR) e de assimilação líquida (TAL) e razão de área foliar (RAF). Excetuando-se a RAF, o estresse salino afetou as demais variáveis estudadas. A MS da parte aérea e raízes, AF, TCA e TCR, sobressaíram-se como os indicadores que melhor representaram o efeito do estresse salino sobre as plantas. Por outro lado, a razão parte aérea/raiz, TAL e RAF foram as variáveis que melhor expressaram os caracteres de tolerância e sensibilidade nas cultivares analisadas.

The work was performed in the greenhouse, aiming to evaluate the effect of salt stress on maize cultivars differing in salinity tolerance. Data were carried out on 2 x 5 factorial arrangement with two maize cultivars (P-3051 and BR-5011) and five sodium chloride levels in nutritive solution (0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 mol m-3). The shoot dry matter, root dry matter, shoot to root ratio, leaf area (LA), absolute growth rate (AGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area ratio (LAR) were analyzed. The salt stress affected all studied variables, except LAR. The shoot dry matter, root dry matter, LA, AGR and RGR were the best parameters to express the salt stress effect on maize plants. On the other hand, the shoot to root ratio, NAR and the LAR were the best parameters to express differences between cultivars regarding their tolerance or sensitivity to salt stress.
